Think Alouds to Improve Reading Comprehension

Think Alouds are a comprehension strategy to help readers with their metacognitive process. The metacognitive process is what readers use to help them self-monitor their comprehension while reading. Think Alouds are a way for teachers to model their thinking while reading. Think Alouds also are a way for young readers to practice thinking about their reading, so they can become better readers.

I have found that the think aloud strategy can be used to help further a student’s comprehension in reading expository texts. Based on the research I found, the think aloud strategy is an appropriate strategy for students in primary education to the middle school level. Expository texts are harder for readers to comprehend due to the unfamiliarity, so if research supports think aloud for expository texts, that leads me to infer that this strategy will also improve comprehension in narrative texts. Think alouds are a research-based strategy for helping readers improve their comprehension.
